08:09 pm - Manga Review: Shouta no Sushi Title: Shouta no Sushi and Shouta no Sushi - Zenkoku Taikaihen Author: Terasawa Daisuke Introduction: Terasawa Daisuke is one of the most well known food manga artists in Japan, from Mister Ajikko to Shouta no Sushi. Shouta no Sushi is the story of a young boy who strides to become the world's best Sushi Chef, he learns from his friends and mentors, competes with his rival, and overcomes anything and everything that blocks his way from his ultimate goal. Shouta no Sushi starts out with Shouta in his hometown, Otaru in Northern Japan, with his father and little sister running a sushi restaurant together. Shouta's father used to be a great chef, but after the death of his wife, things start to go downhill: competition from a chained Sushi Restaurant, alcohol, lost of passion in general. When the story first opens, Shouta's father has pretty much given up everything and is drowned in the realm of alcohol, he doesn't really give a crap about the store anymore, he opens when he wants to and doesn't when he's too tired or just feels too lazy to get up, none of his ingredients are top-notch fresh stuff, he settles for the mediocre stuff that no one would really spend money on, unless one is on a really low budget. Seeing how his father is acting and how their store has twindled from its previous glory, Shouta promised himself that he will, somehow, make their restaurant, Tomoe Sushi, the best in the nation. Ratings - Characters: 7. The characters are quite stereotypical in shounen manga. The protagonist, Shouta, is a boy filled with hope and courage, and of course, like all the rest, Shouta will not let defeat keep him down, he will find and learn from the mistakes and be even better the next time aroud. The characters other then Shouta are actually quite flat. We, as readers, get to see Shouta's ups and downs and his entire learning process, but as for the other characters, we hardly get to see their other side, which is really too bad, because Terasawa sensei's characters are not that bad, so when compared to the characters in his other work, Mister Ajikko, the side characters in Shouta no Sushi are often left out. Art: 6 to 10. It's really not fair if you only give a manga one score when it went on for almost a decade. As time passes and as the artist grows, the art is almost always never consistent, in a good way. You can always see a difference in art style when a story is longer than 5 books. It's the same for Shouta no Sushi, the first eight books are really not that appealing to the eye, the art is still rough and "cute," but by the time book 15 rolls around the corner, Terasawa sensei's art style is very sharp and smooth, very fitting for the elegance and grace that is needed to portray "old school Japanese sushi." It was great seeing how his style progessed and developed. The pictures of the edible things are very very well done, even from the start. It's always amazing to see people DRAW food that makes your mouth water. Plot: 7. The story starts out very nicely, I like the plot and all, but after the first few arcs, the story pretty much repeats itself. It's almost like Dragon Ball Z, but with Sushi. Shouta finds his ubber ingredient, find the best way to keep it fresh, and every other way that would make the sushi GOOD, and then he either wins or loses. But the little side stories are nice, which is why I didn't give this a lower score. The stories of these sushi are all quite touching, it's always heart warming to read Shouta no Sushi.
